At 8 a.m., a little more than two hours before the Commencement Exercises began at the Hart Center, family and friends of the graduating ROTC students gathered in the Hogan Ballroom for the Commissioning Ceremony. Special guest and mentor to the NROTC unit, CAPT John J. Schneider ’86, administered the Oath of Office to nine midshipmen—seven are now officers in the Navy and two are Marine Corps officers. Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., president of the College; Rev. Earle Markey, S.J.; and CAPT Calvin Slocumb, the new commanding officer of the Naval ROTC Consortium were among those to first congratulate the new officers as they accepted their commission and walked across the stage in the Hogan Ballroom. Following a benediction by Paul Covino, associate chaplain and director of liturgy, the new officers and their guests enjoyed a breakfast reception.
